Overview
The Mitsubishi F-2 was developed by Japan with Lockheed Martin from the American F-16, but it is a substantially new aircraft. It has a 25% larger composite wing, a longer fuselage, and was the first fighter to enter service with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.
Its main job is anti-ship attack, carrying up to four heavy missiles to defend Japan's islands from invasion fleets. Only 98 were built because of its high cost; Japan, Britain and Italy are now developing the GCAP fighter to replace it.
