Overview
The DC-10 was a wide-body trijet with one engine under each wing and a third mounted high in the tail fin. It entered service with American Airlines in 1971 and competed directly with the Lockheed TriStar.
Early cargo-door problems and a 1979 crash in Chicago hurt its reputation, but the type went on to serve reliably for decades. The US Air Force flew the KC-10 Extender tanker version, and converted DC-10s still fight wildfires as air tankers. Specifications are for the long-range DC-10-30.
