Overview
The F-5E Tiger II is a small, cheap and easy-to-maintain fighter that Northrop designed for friendly nations that could not afford expensive jets. It won a US competition in 1970 for an "International Fighter Aircraft".
About 1,400 single-seat F-5Es and two-seat F-5Fs were built, serving more than 30 countries. The US Navy and Marine Corps still use them as "aggressors" that imitate enemy fighters in training, a role made famous by the film Top Gun.
